Health Status of Stranded Common Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Contamination by Immunotoxic Pollutants: A Threat to the Pelagos Sanctuary—Western Mediterranean Sea

چکیده

Between 2019 and 2021, 21 bottlenose dolphins were found stranded dead along the Ligurian Pelagos Sanctuary coast (Italy). For 11 animals, out of a total 14 recovered, cause death was classified as natural, anthropic, or not determined based on gross histological pathology ancillary testing. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) examined in their blubber, results discussed according to toxicological properties. All specimens showed following trend: PCBs > DDTs >> HCB, levels cancerogenic, mutagenic, teratogenic organochlorine compounds (T-OCs) >50% OCs. Immunosuppressant compound (IS-OC) 10 animals above 50% PCB always exceeded threshold 17 mg/kg lipid weight for PCB-induced adverse health effects. The suggest that living undergo high level exposure pathogens OCs, betraying designation Cetacean and, consequently, region created conservation. Immune dysfunction infectious disease susceptibility appear be highly connected with OC xenobiotics. These data are useful understand mortality trends cetacean populations, well developing policies conservation management this important protected area Mediterranean.

Thermal tolerance in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Water and air temperature are potentially limiting factors to the pole-ward distributions of coastal bottlenose dolphins. This study assessed the lower critical temperature of captive bottlenose dolphins to air temperature (LCT(a)) and water temperature (LCT(w)) through the use of open flow respirometry. Five dolphins, ranging from 14 to 33 years of age and acclimated to the waters of the south...

Lobomycosis in Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), North Carolina

Lacazia loboi, a cutaneous fungus, is found in humans and dolphins from transitional tropical (Florida) and tropical (South America) regions. We report 2 cases of lobomycosis in stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and 1 case of lobomycosis-like disease in 1 free-swimming, pelagic, offshore bottlenose dolphin from North Carolina, where no cases have previously been observed.

Microsatellite diversity in captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

The utility of microsatellites for managing captive Tursiops truncatus was investigated. Specifically the level of genetic diversity among the loci examined and their usefulness for resolving paternity was assessed. Overall a relatively low level of genetic variation was found among captive dolphins. In addition, a high percentage of common alleles was found among dolphins belonging to differen...

Whistle matching in wild bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

Dolphin communication is suspected to be complex, on the basis of their call repertoires, cognitive abilities, and ability to modify signals through vocal learning. Because of the difficulties involved in observing and recording individual cetaceans, very little is known about how they use their calls. This report shows that wild, unrestrained bottlenose dolphins use their learned whistles in m...

New recognition of Enterovirus infections in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

An enterovirus was cultured from an erosive tongue lesion of a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). The morphology of virions on negative staining electron microscopy was consistent with those of enteroviruses. Analysis of 2613 bp of the polyprotein gene identified the isolate as a novel enterovirus strain, tentatively named bottlenose dolphin enterovirus (BDEV), that nests within the speci...
